As the permanent makeup industry grows in popularity, more and more people are taking the plunge and training to become a permanent makeup artist. As much as we all love seeing our industry thrive, we do still acknowledge that the industry has become more saturated in recent years. This means that self-promotion and standing out is more important than ever!

In this blog we will talk you through all the different ways you can promote yourself and your PMU business to fill your diaries with bookings & also grow your business to the scale you are aspiring to.

Get Your Branding Right

A huge part of your PMU business is your marketing strategy. To ensure you can market your services effectively, you need to make sure your branding is spot on. As a beginner, make sure you take the time to research this topic and develop branding that works for you. This includes a business name, logo, brand colour pallete, website and more.

You want your branding to stand out, as there will be many other PMU artists in your area offering similar services as you. Don’t be afraid to inject some personality and vibrance into your branding. Investing in a professional logo and assets with a qualified graphic designer can also make a huge difference! It may cost more than creating a free logo via Canva but a designer will create something completely bespoke that meets your brief.

Once you have your branding, you need to ensure that you are consistent with this across all your social media and marketing channels!

Be Active and Consistent on Socials

This is one we emphasise all the time but being active and consistent on your social media channels is key. Showing up everyday whether that is through IG stories, reels or grid posts – you don’t want to fall off the radar and ignore your social channels as this is how many potential clients will discover you and your business.

A top tip is to show your face on your social channels! Your leads want to connect with you and learn who you are before they commit to booking in for a treatment. Talking on your stories and showing yourself on your channels helps these leads establish that initial connection and become invested in you as an artist, making them much more likely to enquire and book in. Network and Attend In-Person Events

If you’re not immersing yourself within the community and connecting with your fellow artists, it’s likely you’re missing out on key opportunities. Not only can networking increase your exposure, it allows artists to grow their reputation within the industry. Making connections with other artists will provide you with additional support and even the opportunity for collaboration.

Also, attending in-person events can be incredibly valuable. Not only can they provide huge amounts of education and knowledge, but it is also further opportunity to network with other artists and in-person, you’re likely to develop a long-lasting connection much quicker!

This also includes entering PMU championships and competitions, such as the Browista events or the UK PMU Conference. Many artists struggle with imposter syndrome and worry that their work isn’t good enough to submit, but if you don’t try you will never know! And if you are a runner-up or even win an award in your chosen category, this will be huge for your credibility and reputation. You need to back yourself!

Our Killer Beauty Community Event takes place on Saturday 4th May in Manchester and we do have limited VIP tickets left. With 6 live demonstrations, guest speakers, workshops and more – this event is a must for anyone looking to promote themselves and their business. The VIP dinner is the perfect setting to establish those all-important connections with established, leading PMU masters.

Invest in Paid Ads

In a saturated market, simply posting content to social media isn’t enough and may not get you in front of the right people – if you are actively trying to increase your bookings. This is where Paid Ads can provide huge value to you and your business.

Many artists and beauty business see huge success with Paid Ad Campaigns but if you are new to paid ads, the idea can be daunting. Lucky for you, we invited PMU Business Coach Emma Jones of Brow’d Social down to our HQ to film some content. You can watch Emma’s free guide to Using Paid Ads to Stand Out in a Saturated Industry here.

Diversify Your Business

This is key to standing out, especially if your aim is to bring in more leads and fill your diaries with bookings. This can include training in additional treatments – for example, if you offer brows why not look in to a lip blush course? Offering more services means your business will not only appeal to a bigger client-base, but you can cross-sell these treatments to an existing client – maybe even with a package or returning customer discount!

You should also try and diversify your client base by taking on clients of different ages, skin types, skin tones and PMU styles. Building up your portfolio of a diverse client base allows you to share this to your socials (and paid ads) to show off your skills and how many different clients you can work on and produce beautiful results. Of course, if you find your niche and know that your signature style appeals to a specific type of client, embrace that, and make sure you’re targeting those individuals with your paid ads!

Become a Fountain of PMU Knowledge

You know what they say, knowledge is power! And this couldn’t be truer about the PMU industry. In recent years, we have seen a huge shift towards education and knowledge – especially when it comes to the tools you are using. Interest in pigmentology and colour theory especially has sky-rocketed in the last 2 years and artists now understand the importance of learning about the ink that they are tattooing into the skin.

You can rest assured that the artists at the top of their game are fully clued up on pigment science and understand exactly what ingredients make up their pigments. They have a clear understanding of how these colourants will heal and age in the skin, meaning they can create long-lasting results that won’t fade with disastrous tones or be impossible to remove with saline or laser. This means they are highly trusted and respected by their clients and peers!

If you want to stand out and take your business to new heights, you need to take education and pigmentology seriously. We would suggest investing in a tool such as the PMUni Colourant Manual by Jasmine Diebelius which can be ordered via our site. You could also enroll in an online course, a great option is Science Behind the Ink by Perma U, taught by Perma Blend Founder and Brand Director Anne-Marie Rubino.

Sculpted Studios also offer online courses in colour theory for lips, brows and SMP which you can find here – these are perfect to accompany the Perma Blend X Sculpted Enhance, Embody, Restore and Reclaim pigment sets for lips and scalp.

If you are struggling with standing out in the industry, bringing in more clients and making a name for yourself in the PMU world then give these steps a try! It may mean pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, investing some money or trying something new, but the benefits will be 100% worth it.
