Completing a live permanent makeup demonstration at a professional event is an important milestone in your career. It’s an opportunity to showcase your skills, educate other artists, and build your confidence.

But we understand it can also feel nerve-wracking, and you may have concerns about things going wrong. Our blog breaks down some of the most common worries and offers practical solutions to help you feel relaxed, organised, and able to really enjoy the best moment of the day!

Will My Model Turn Up?

One of the biggest worries you might have is whether your model will turn up. To prevent any last-minute cancellations, try to choose someone you know, such as a friend or family member who understands how important this event is for you.

If you need to use someone you don’t know personally, ask for a deposit or partial payment to keep them committed, and if possible, arrange for a backup model.

If the worst does happen and your model cancels on the day, keep in mind that PMU events are full of people, and you might still find someone willing to step in.

Will My Model Be Okay During The Treatment?

Live demos can be overwhelming for the model as many people crowd around, and treatments can take longer due to pauses for questions, so it’s important to prepare your model in advance.

Make them aware that it will be different from a normal studio experience and manage their expectations. You can also set up a code word to use when the model needs a break, or for treatments like lip blush where the model can’t talk, ask them to tap you if they need to pause.

All of this can help your model feel calm and safe, making the demo smoother and more enjoyable for both of you.

What If Something Unexpected Happens?

You might worry about unexpected hiccups but remember you’re not alone. PMU events are all about community and the event organisers are there to support you. Plus, other artists will often step in to help when needed.

Most of the worries we create in our minds never actually happen; the best approach is to stay calm, take a deep breath, and trust yourself and your skills.

What If I Don't Know The Answers To Some Questions?

It’s completely normal if your mind goes blank when someone asks you a question, or if you simply don’t know the answer. See it as a great opportunity to learn. In the moment, you can say something like, “That’s a great question, could you DM me later so I can send you a more detailed answer after the demo?”.

This gives you time to research and respond properly. It also shows your professionalism, and people will understand that while you’re performing a treatment, you can’t go too in-depth and appreciate you following up with them later.

You can also make a list of questions that you anticipate and prepare answers in advance to prevent you from being caught by surprise.

What If I Feel Overstimulated By The Number Of Questions?

Sometimes the number of questions might feel overwhelming. The good news is that most of the questions will be very similar. People often ask about what cartridges or pigments you’re using, as well as where you get your supplies. If you find you’re being asked the same thing repeatedly, consider making a small sign with this information and displaying it during your demo. This helps reduce repetitive interruptions and allows you to stay focused.

You could also set up a Q&A video on Instagram after the event. Have people write down questions and drop them in a box at your stand, then answer them in a video. This is a great way to promote yourself on social media and build connections with your audience.

What If I Forget Something Or Don’t Have Everything I Need?

The best way to avoid this is to prepare early and pack your kit in advance. Bring spares of everything you can, including cartridges, gloves, machine cables, pigments, batteries, machines. If possible, have a consultation with your model beforehand so you know exactly what they want, which pigments will suit them, and what will work best for their skin type.

Some all-rounder equipment worth including in your kit:

If you do forget something, don’t panic, other artists are often happy to help, and supplier stands usually have essentials available for you to purchase on the day.

A great way to stay organised is by using the Ghost Disposable Tray Tops, which have different sections including ink cup holders, water cup holders, cartridge slots, and a space for aftercare or glide lines.
